And I Pray

For soprano, mezzo-soprano, and piano

“And I Pray” is a duet for soprano and mezzo-soprano framed around a very simple prayer during hard times—not for strength, courage, or wisdom, but simply for peace. The simplistic, bell-like piano line creates an atmospheric effect, allowing the relationship between the voices to remain at the forefront of the song.

Performed by Jolaine Kerley, soprano; Mairi-Irene McCormack, mezzo-soprano; Megan Crane, piano

And I Pray
Gina Friedrich

The ragged grasses tremble
though the air is still today.
They bend above the weathered stones
as I walk through this sacred place.

Here in the garden,
I fall to my knees
and raise my face towards the sky,
surrounded by the fallen leaves.

And I pray that tomorrow will be gentle,
and I pray that we will find relief.
Even when our faith is fading,
grant us peace.

Upon a distant hilltop,
the limber pine trees sway:
silhouettes against the dark’ning sky
as the evening fades away.

I’ll light a candle
when the shadows are deep,
and so I’ll keep my vigil
even as the heavens sleep.

And I pray that tomorrow will be gentle,
and I pray that we will find relief.
Even when our faith is fading,
grant us peace.
