Autumn will Remember

For voice and piano

“Autumn will Remember” is based around the concept of leaving a legacy—our actions can have a positive impact on the future, even when we’re not around to see the results. This song portrays Autumn as a maternal figure and features a piano line that evolves along with the seasons.

Performed by Jolaine Kerley, soprano and Megan Crane, piano

And Autumn does arrive on wings of fallen leaves,
her cloak blown by the whisper of summer’s final breeze.
The birds begin their journey; she waves to them in flight,
but she promises to linger until the trees turn white.

“I saw your garden thrive; you brought the harvest in.
Your little home lies ready to face the winter winds.
Now the days grow shorter, they fade into the west.
As the earth prepares for slumber, may you also find your rest.

I’ll remember you
in the piles of golden leaves and the birdhouse on the hill,
in the chimes that choose to sing even when the world is still.

I’ll remember you
in the rows of apple trees that awaken with the dawn,
in the footprints in the frost when your journey leads you on.”

When Spring returns again, she will remember too:
your kindness in the meadow, before the saplings grew.
She will keep the garden that you watered long ago,
and tend the tulips that you planted that slept beneath the snow.
