Paths Diverge

For SATB choir, a cappella

“Paths Diverge” acknowledges the difficult process of growing away from people and the sense of grief that results from this. With nods to many different composers and a simple melody that grows in complexity, this song moves from sorrow to acceptance through three distinct verses.

Performed by Josiah Maxfield, bass-baritone; John Brough, tenor; Mairi-Irene
McCormack, mezzo-soprano; Abby Mendola, mezzo-soprano; Zoe Delos Santos, soprano; Grace Samycia, soprano; Maria Pottle, soprano

Paths Diverge
Gina Friedrich

We travelled together; the road was ours to share.
We were not afraid of the branches on our way.
Our destinations changed, and separate dreams emerged.
As time grew weary, I watched our paths diverge.

Carve a trail, walk into the forest,
through the trees; come back to my side.

We followed the current; our boats tossed by the waves.
I wish we could stay, but the water does not wait.
We paddle different streams; they drift and so do we.
I still remember the day the river split.

Build a bridge, cross over the water,
o’er the sea; come back to my side.

Will I watch you fade away
until I’m waving at a silhouette?

I’ll always remember the friends we used to be.
We may wander far, but our roots are planted deep.
Was this our last goodbye? I would have liked to know,
but it’s a mystery which way the winds will blow.

Hold your course, push into the current,
tame the breeze; this journey is yours alone.

Maybe we’ll meet again.
