When the Final Snowflake Falls

For voice and piano

“When the Final Snowflake Falls” features a snowflake that falls during the springtime. Knowing that his fate is inevitable and that he will melt when he reaches the ground, the snowflake attempts to make the most of the time that he has. The falling snowflake motive in the piano and the vocal melody mimic the movement of a snowflake as it rises and falls in the wind.

Performed by Gina Friedrich, mezzo-soprano and Megan Crane, piano

When the Final Snowflake Falls
Gina Friedrich

When the final snowflake falls, cast from a lonely cloud,
Spring awaits his visit, her budding trees unbowed.
So, he sails as the grass is growing, no powder waits to break his fall.
He spins and he soars while the stream is flowing and tries to witness it all.

But the leaves are turning green; he feels the warmth of day.
The daffodils are blooming, he knows he cannot stay.
So, he floats while the sun is beaming; he sees the sparrows in the sky
and watches the world, a teardrop gleaming, for the life that will pass him by.

Yet he shimmers as he falls, a candle cloaked in white.
An angel leaves the heavens, resplendent in his flight.
So just for a moment, he dances, before the current sets him down.
He doesn’t flinch as the earth advances; he knows he’ll water the ground.
